When the buzz took over
town that Former National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) was the young
officer that arrested the President Mohammadu Buhari during a military coup on
August 27, 1985 that saw (Gen) Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida becoming the Head of
States, many people took the rumour with a pinch of salt knowing that many of
such took over town in a similar manner that later turned out to be false. Moreover,
when ex Milad of Bornu State, Col. Aminu
(rtd) said he was the one who arrested Buhari with two other officers, namely, Major
John Madaki and Lawan Gwadabe, many people were skeptical in believing the
Dasuki tale.
However, the man at the center of news lately Col. Sambo
Dasuki (rtd) told a Federal High Court in Abuja that he was being punished by the
president for his perceived sin of his role in that coup d’état many years ago.
Dasuki, though did not name any person, but those who should know claimed his
statement was directed to no one but the president of Nigeria whom he said is
punishing him out of vendetta.
Former national security adviser of ex-president Goodluck
Jonathan, Sambo Dasuki Speaking through
his counsel, Mr. Joseph Daudu (SAN), Dasuki told the court: “It is clear that
the defendant (Dasuki) is being punished by the powers that be for the
perceived offences committed long before. We leave them to the Almighty God for
his ultimate judgment.” Dasuki had been arraigned before three different high
courts for various allegations and was granted bail but rearrested in December
last year by the Federal Government and has since been held incommunicado.
Federal Government had approached the court,
seeking secret trial of Dasuki who is facing charges of unlawful possession of
