There is no doubt that it is enshrined in the constitution
that no one can be termed a criminal until a competent court pronounces such. However,
in the case of the now very famous Evans the kidnapper, many Nigerians are not
ready to befit him with the tag of a suspect but a criminal because of several
confession made by him and the assistance he has been able to render in the
investigation on his nefarious activities. So it became a big deal when the
news surfaced yesterday that Evans has sued the Inspector General of Police,
Idris Ibrahim, Nigeria Police Force, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State,
Fatai Owoseni and the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command. Not a few people got into a heated debate
over the latest development with many questioning his audacity to challenge the
law that is holding him.
Since that yesterday, many have wanted to know the lawyer
who filed the motion in court. The lawyer is no other person than Barrister
Olukoya Ogungbeje, a Yoruba manwho filed the Fundamental Human rights lawsuit
against the authourity asking the police to release him from detention or
charge him to court. The case is yet to be assigned to a judge.
